The Canberra Choral Society presented This Shining Night, a concert of beautiful contemporary choral music from North America, on Saturday 21 September 2024. The program featured radiant, lyrical and whimsical choral works directed by Dan Walker, CCS Music Director, with Rachel Mink, Soprano, and Anthony Smith on piano.
Included were settings for chorus and piano of Sure on this shining night by Samuel Barber and by Morten Lauridsen, as well as Randall Thompson’s setting of Choose something like a star, Gwyneth Walker’s Ring out, wild bells, Jane Kozhevnikova’s setting of Can we reflect the stars, and Sarah Quartel’s setting of ‘Hope’ is the thing with feathers.
A capella works performed included Samuel Barber’s setting of James Stephens’ poem The Coolin', Eric Whitacre’s Lux Aurumque, and Amy Beach’s Peace I leave with you. Dan Walker’s arrangement for Soprano and chorus, of popular Gershwin classic Summertime was also performed.
