What makes a piece of music outstanding?

This is the question The Canberra Choral Society Choir will be exploring in their new concert series entitled The Best Choral Music Ever Written, concerts aiming to entertain, inform and inspire Canberra audiences.

The CCS Choir’s first concert in the series will include the best choral music by a German or Austrian. And since Germany and Austria excelled in the genre of the oratorio much of the program includes tasters from the very best, including Handel’s Saul, Haydn’s The Creation, and Mendelssohn’s Elijah.

Also included in the program are sections of major religious works like J.S. Bach’s B Minor Mass, Brahms’ Requiem and Mozart’s Coronation Mass as well as the opening chorus from Carl Orff’s rhythmic secular cantata Carmina Burana.

Great shorter works will also be performed including Heinrich Schütz’s Deutsches Magnificat, a work for two unaccompanied choirs and inspired by the works of his great Venetian teacher Giovanni Gabrieli.
